Gaspar holds a Master's degree in
Law (International Trade and
Investment Law) from the
University of Cape Town and
Washington University and an
LLB (Hons) in Law from the
University of Dar es Salaam. He is
an active member of Tanganyika
law Society and East African Law
Society.

He was admitted to the bar in 2004.

Brief Biography;

Gaspar co-heads the Litigation and Tax practice. Gaspar has over a decade of experience in Commercial and Tax Litigation and Dispute resolution. He has successfully represented clients in over 100 cases including over 20 tax cases.

Gaspar has acted for multinational corporations on a range of tax disputes dealing with issues on the assessment of income tax and VAT disputes. He is also experienced on commercial arbitration and has recently successfully represented a multinational construction company before the ICC.

Relevant Experience

  • Successfully represented a multinational provider of ground and air cargo services in challenging a tax assessment issued by the Tanzania Revenue Authority in excess of Tshs 500m before the Tanzania Tax Appeal Tribunal
  • Successfully represented on international construction company in an ICC arbitration against a local contractor in connection with the construction of appron slabs at an airport in Mbeya involving in excess of Tshs. 2 billion.
  • Successfully represented a local bank in a dispute involving over Tshs 10 billion against a defaulting borrower in connection with milling business in Dar es Salaam.
  • Successfully represented an Australian drilling company in a Tshs 2 billion income tax dispute against the Tanzania Revenue Authority.
  • Successfully represented a container inspection company which was a subsidiary of international container Inspection Company in a USD 8 million VAT dispute against the Tanzania Revenue Authority.
  • Successfully represented an international Norwegian company in an ICC arbitration in Paris against the Tanzania national roads agency in a USD 1 million dispute involving breach of contract.
  • Currently representing Standard Chartered Bank Hong Kong in a claim of approx. USD. 3.2 billion at the High Court of Tanzania against an electricity construction and operation company in connection with a loan restructuring and refinancing.
  • Currently representing Standard Chartered Bank Hong Kong in a claim of over USD 3.2 billion filed at the High Court of Tanzania at Dar es Salaam.
  • Currently representing Standard Chartered Bank Tanzania Limited and two of its affiliates in a USD 490 million claim involving a power purchase agreement. <
