Fatma heads the litigation practice at the firm. She has over twenty (20) years of experience in civil and commercial litigation and specialises in civil litigation, arbitration, constitutional law and administrative law and is associated with various landmark reported judgments of the Court of Appeal and the High Court of Tanzania.

Fatma is in charge of a very successful litigation practice at IMMMA Advocates which currently handles in excess of 250 cases including at the Court of Appeal of Tanzania.

Fatma is well versed in laws relating to tax disputes, labour disputes and has a track record of successfully representing top tier banks in commercial litigation and arbitration including judicial review, tax disputes, insolvency and receiverships, intellectual property law, and media law. Fatma is also well versed in matters of competition law and has advised clients on a board range of competition issues, including instituting, defending and settling anti-competition disputes, dominance and market abuse claims as well as the application of competition law to commercial arrangements and has regular dealings with the Fair Competition Commission and the Fair Competition Tribunal.

She was admitted to the bar at Tanzania and Zanzibar in 1994.

  • Successfully represented various range of clients including major banks, mining companies and telecommunication companies in Corporate commercial, employment, Tax and civil litigation matters.
  • Lead adviser in the Civil Justice Reform program commissioned by the Law Reform Commission of Tanzania in association with the East Africa Law Society and the Law Society of England and Wales to undertake a comprehensive review and preparation of draft Bills of the laws relating to the Civil Justice System.
  • Successfully represented a multinational engineering consulting firm before the ICC in Paris for a claim against the Tanzania National Roads Agency for breach of a contract of supervision of Road Construction.
  • Lead adviser in the World Bank Funded Business Environment Strengthening for Tanzania programme for preparing concepts, supporting regulations, needs assessments and implementation plan for business licensing in Zanzibar.
  • Acted as the lead adviser in the Bank of Tanzania assignment on the study of court cases involving banks in Tanzania.
  • Successfully represented the Government of Zanzibar in arbitration proceeding initiated by Eco-Tech (Zanzibar) Limited against the Principal Secretary, Ministry of Finance and Economic Affairs before the London Court of International Arbitration;
  • Fatma was part of the team that was responsible for the drafting of the new Commercial Court Civil Procedure Rules. The assignment entailed reviewing the existing legislation governing civil proceedings before the commercial court, ascertaining the challenges and obstacles encumbering such proceedings and thereafter drafting the new rules to overcome such hindrances.
  • Advised the Registered Trustees of the Investment Climate for Africa Trust in a comprehensive data collection and analysis review of the Tanzania modernization of the Judiciary Project.
  • Successfully represented BP Tanzania Limited and Oryx at the Fair Competition Tribunal of Tanzania against the energy and utilities regulatory authority of Tanzania.
